The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back
to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the
Mother of the Gods. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have
the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day
with their mothers. In the United States Mother's Day was first
suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the
Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Jarvis
persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate
Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the
2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated
in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to
ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish
a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day
was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson,
in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day

A woman who holds a position of authority or responsibility
similar to that of a mother: a den mother. A creative source; an
origin: Philosophy is the mother of the sciences. Maternal love
and tenderness: brought out the mother in her. The biggest or most
significant example of its kind: the mother of all battles. Relating
to or being mother. In non-sexual organisms, "mother" can sometimes
be used to mean "parent"; in the case of single-celled organisms
that reproduce by fission, the mother is a cell that divides to
produce "daughters". Mothers typically have a very important role
in raising children, and the title mother can be given to a woman
other than a biological parent who fills this role. Mothers are
celebrated on a yearly holiday, the Mother's Day, around the world.
As such, someone can be a mother and not a mom, or a mom and not
a mother.
While at World Youth Day in Paris, John Cardinal O'Connor
recalled a meeting with Mother Theresa on the day he was elevated
to the Sacred College of Cardinals, " I saw her as I was coming
down the stairs of the High Altar at St. Peter's Basilica and she
said to me, 'Give God permission. "Keep the joy of loving the poor
and share this joy with all you meet. Remember works of love are
works of Peace. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in
Skopje, Macedonia, in the former Yugoslavia, she was the youngest
of three children. In her teens, Agnes became a member of a youth
group in her local pairsh called Sodality. Through her involvement
with their activities guided by a Jesuit priest, Agnes became interested
in missionaries. Mother Teresa recalled later, "I was to leave the
convent and work with the poor, living among them. Mother Teresa
started with a school in the slums to teach the children of the
poor. The group rented a room so they could care for helpless ...

Mother Teresa, whose original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu,
was born on August 27, 1910 in what is now Skopje, Macedonia. For
her work with the poor around the world she received the 1979 Nobel
Peace Prize. Her interest in India began when as a child she attended
meetings of an organisation known as the Sodality of Our Lady where
letters from Yugoslavian priests working in Bengal were read. On
29th November 1928 she joined a religious order and took the name
Teresa. The order immediately sent her to India. A few years later,
she began teaching in Calcutta, and in 1948 the Catholic Church
granted her permission to leave her convent and work among the city's
poor people. She became an Indian citizen that same year. In 1950,
she founded a religious order in Calcutta called the Missionaries
of Charity. The order provides food for the needy and operates hospitals,
schools, orphanages, youth centers, and shelters for lepers and
the dying poor.
In the U.S. Mothers' Day is a holiday celebrated on second
Sunday in May. It is a day when children honor their mothers with
cards, gifts, and flowers. In the U.S., in 1908 Ana Jarvis, from
Grafton, West Virginia, began a campaign to establish a national
Mother's Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West
Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's
death. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers,
businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national
Mother's Day. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official
announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national observance that
was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. Many other countries
of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times
throughout the year. John 19:26-27 When Jesus saw his mother there,
and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother,
"Dear woman, here is your son," and ...
