Lillian Gilbreth was the mother of modern management. Together
with her husband Frank, she pioneered industrial management techniques
still in use today. She was one of the first "superwomen" to combine
a career with her home life. She was a prolific author, the recipient
of many honorary degrees, and the mother of 12. She is perhaps best
remembered for motherhood. Her children wrote the popular books
Cheaper by the Dozen and Belles on Their Toes about their experiences
growing up with such a large and famous family. But Lillian Moller
Gilbreth was not only a mother; she was an engineer and an industrial
psychologist. Lillian excelled in high school and decided that she
wanted to study literature and music. Her ability to combine a career
and family led to her being called, by the California Monthly in
1944, "a genius in the art of living."
Do you know yet how you are going to celebrate Mother's Day?
I hope that you are planning to do something special for your mother.
If you need some creative ideas, follow the links to the right -
many of these web sites have great ideas for what you can do for
your mother. For many mothers and children, Mother's Day is a special
occasion, but for many others it is a sad one. How can we, as Christians,
make Mother's Day Special for these women and children? Here are
some scenarios of people that may be saddened by Mother's Day: Children
whose Mother is Deceased or has abandoned them Can Christian Families
gather these children with them on Mother's Day? Mothers whose children
are deceased or have abandoned the family Can we 'adopt' these mothers,
and have them join us for Mother's Day celebrations? Remember to
tell your mother that you love her.
Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was a member of the Académie
Française and a leading intellectual of his time. Ironically, his
dialogue Parallèles des anciens et des modernes (Parallels between
the Ancients and the Moderns), 1688-1697, which compared the authors
of antiquity unfavorably to modern writers, served as a forerunner
for the Age of Enlightenment in Europe, an era that was not always
receptive to tales of magic and fantasy. The Stories Perrault could
have not predicted that his reputation for future generations would
rest almost entirely on a slender book published in 1697 containing
eight simple stories with the unassuming title: Stories or Tales
from Times Past, with Morals, with the added title in the frontispiece,
Tales of Mother Goose. The original title, in French, was Histoires
ou contes du temps passé, avec des moralités: Contes de ma mère
l'Oye. Charles Perrault, in a symbolically significant gesture,
did not publish the book in question under his own ...
Without answering a number of questions connected with the
explanation of the prophecy, we must confine ourselves here to the
bare proof that the virgin mentioned by the prophet is Mary the
Mother of Christ. As the Word Incarnate possessed from the first
moment of His conception all His perfections excepting those connected
with His bodily development, His mother is rightly said to "compass
a man". Jewish Doctors of the Law maintained that a boy became a
son of the law at the age of twelve years and one day; after that
he was bound by the legal precepts. Probably it was after the second
festal day that Joseph and Mary returned with the other Galilean
pilgrims; the law did not require a longer sojourn in the Holy City.
The contention of Nestorius denying to Mary the title "Mother of
God" [75] was followed by the teaching of the Council of Ephesus
proclaiming Mary to be Theotokos in the true sense of the word.
One naturally supposes that one ...
It is named for Mrs. Isabella Eleanor (Mother) Neff who donated
six acres of land along the Leon River in 1916 which became the
first park site. Her son was Texas Governor Pat M. Neff, who served
as Governor from 1921 to 1925. After the death of his mother in
1921, Governor Neff created the Mother Neff Memorial Park which
later became the nucleus of the Texas State Park System. The park,
located west of Moody, now contains 259 acres in Coryell County.
The additional land was deeded to the state in 1934 by private owners;
Governor Neff deeded 250 acres and Mr. Frank Smith deeded 3 acres.
The park was opened to the public in 1937. An excavation in 1935
unearthed three Indian graves and many artifacts. During prehistoric
times this area was occupied by several groups of Indians, including
some groups probably related to the Tonkawas. Current conditions
can vary from day to day.
The archbishop himself had been hospitalized at the same
facility and shared the same doctor as Mother Teresa. He said he
noticed that while Mother Teresa was calm during the day, at night
she appeared "extremely agitated." D'Souza said Mother Teresa would
pull off wires and other monitoring equipment stuck to her body.
He said that is when he believed Mother Teresa "might be under the
attack of the evil one." After the exorcism was over, the archbishop
said Mother Teresa "slept like a baby." D'Souza said the revelations
about Mother Teresa show that she was "both holy and human," making
her even more special. Those revelations were first made to CNN
by Mother Teresa's closest confidante, Sister Nirmala, who now heads
the order, Missionaries of Charity, established by Mother Theresa
in 1950. She said Mother Teresa is most remembered for her humanness
-- "How human she was, how loving she was. "At the end of the day,
she came back and she wrote in her diary, 'Today, I ...

The mother of Michael Jackson's accuser testified, cried
and rambled in the pop star's molestation trial Wednesday. "Please
don't judge me," the mother begged. "My understanding is that [the
mother] will answer all questions put to her other than questions
of her welfare application, questions that she answered in her welfare
applications or in receipt of welfare benefits," prosecutor Ronald
Zonen said. The defense, predictably, wasn't pleased, asking for
a mistrial if the mother was allowed to "pick and choose" cross-examination
topics. The accuser's mother is no mere prosecution witness--by
the defense's own words she is "the kingpin" in the government's
conspiracy case against Jackson. The two would talk on the telephone
for "hours," the mother said. On the stand, the mother said she
was unaware her children had been filmed, and clueless about the
documentary until Jackson, whom she hadn't heard from or seen in
months, called her in February 2003. "I just thought, you ...

Mirra Alfassa (Paris 21.2.1878 - Pondicherry 17.11.73) was
born as the second child of an Egyptian mother and a Turkish father,
a few months after her parents had settled in France. An extraordinarily
gifted child, who became an accomplished painter and musician, she
had many inner experiences from early childhood on. In her twenties
she studied occultism in Algeria with Max Theon and his English
wife Alma, who was a highly developed medium. After her return to
Paris, the Mother worked with several different groups of spiritual
seekers. Sri Aurobindo recognised in her an embodiment of the dynamic
expressive aspect of evolutionary, creative Force, in India traditionally
known and approached as the 'Supreme Mother'. It was the Mother,
as Sri Aurobindo's 'Shakti', who organised the growing group of
followers around him into the Sri Aurobindo Ashram from November
1926 onwards, and who in 1952, after his passing in 1950, created
the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education ...

No fictional work can be totally divorced from the historical
circumstances of its conception[1], but literature represents much
more than a pristine chronicle of a particular time and place. While
a work can be reactive to historical events, the translation of
those occurrences into a text invariably incorporates elements of
the author's own views and experiences. Works which describe and
respond to contemporary events can also provide implied prescriptive
models, or pointers to hypothetical future realities. Works of this
period often responded directly to historical events, but many such
texts can also be read to encompass prescriptive models for the
future. While most of the social alternatives discussed in this
period collapsed in the conflagration of the Russian Revolution,
they nonetheless can provide insights into the potential for different
historical outcomes. Gorky's Mother was less direct in its focus,
and was structurally quite different, taking the form ...

As Free Inquiry was going to press, we heard that Mother
Teresa was suffering from heart trouble and malaria and there was
concern about her chances of survival. It was, therefore, suggested
to the editors that it would be inappropriate to print an interview
that contains criticism of Mother Teresa's work and influence. However,
in view of the media's general failure to investigate the work of
Mother Teresa or to publish critical comments about her, the editors
felt it important to proceed with the publication of this revealing
interview. One of the most salient examples of people's willingness
to believe anything if it is garbed in the appearance of holiness
is the uncritical acceptance of the idea of Mother Teresa as a saint
by people who would normally be thinking - however lazily - in a
secular or rational manner. The second was a sort of journalistic
curiosity as to why it was that no one had asked any serious questions
about Mother Teresa's theory ...
As it begins, you're pretty sure you've heard this one before.
Wait, no, maybe this time it's different. Maybe this time it'll
have an extra nugget of sage advice. Mom: Have I ever told you about
the first time you ever ate pineapple? We had gone to Hawaii on
vacation, and there was a fruit stand by the side of the road where
they sold all sorts of tropical fruit-- I remember this one where
Calvin was pounding nails into the coffee table, and his mother
comes in and screams, "What are you doing??!!" and Calvin just sort
of looks befuddled and says, "Is this some sort of trick question?"
M: Thursday on Oprah they were talking to bereaved parents and they
had a mother on whose son swallowed a nail when he was two, but
no one saw him do it, and I guess the thing just ripped him up from
the inside over the course of a few days, and by the time she realized
something was wrong and took him to the hospital it was too late,
and he died. Ian Bakke is the pseudonym for a TMN ...
