As Americans are spending nearly $10.5 billion on Mother's
Day gifts this year, it's worth remembering that lots of today's
moms -- there are 82.5 million, according to the Census -- are ambivalent
about the meaning of Mother's Day, its role in their lives and its
ever-growing gifting pressures. For the generation who became mothers
in the 1950s and 1960s, Mother's Day is a still-important "special"
day, and they expect to be acknowledged in some way by their families.
It's a peculiar kind of baby-boomer denial -- a mother is your mother,
not you -- and being acknowledged on Mother's Day may be less crucial.
"My sisters and I know (Mother's Day) really matters to her, and
we would feel horrible if we didn't do anything," says Williams,
42, a divorced mother of three sons. My kids show me in so many
other ways that they appreciate me and love me, and not necessarily
just on Mother's Day. She says there's way more guilt involved in
motherhood today, so perhaps, perversely, ...
Mother to child transmission (MTCT) is when an HIV positive
woman passes the virus to her baby. In 2004, around 640,000 children
under 15 became infected with HIV, mainly through mother to child
transmission. Preventing the transmission of HIV from HIV positive
mothers to their infants during pregnancy, labour, delivery and
breastfeeding. The study, which involved American women with mildly
symptomatic HIV disease and no prior drug treatment, found no serious
short-term side effects in the mothers or their infants.6 Women
were required to take five oral doses of AZT per day during pregnancy
and AZT injections during labour, and their infants were given oral
AZT every six hours for six weeks. This study found that a single
dose of nevirapine given to the mother at the onset of labour and
to the baby after delivery roughly halved the rate of HIV transmission.
As it is given only once to the mother and baby, single dose nevirapine
is relatively cheap and easy to administer. ...
When a woman is unable to carry a child, whether due to to
medical, genetic or social reasons, the couple or single woman may
choose to find a surrogate mother who can carry the baby. Dangers
to the life of the Intended Mother - for example, severe heart,
kidney or respiratory disease, unstable diabetes, or severe high
blood pressure. Both parents - the egg is retrieved from the IM
- intended mother and joined with sperm from the IF - intended father.
This is known as Gestational Surrogacy (the surrogate mother has
no genetic connection to the child). Mother & sperm donor -
the egg is retrieved from the IM - intended mother and joined with
donor sperm. Surrogate mother & IF (intended father) - the surrogate
mother goes through a process of AI (artificial insemination) using
the IF's sperm. This is known as Traditional Surrogacy (the surrogate
mother is biologically the mother of the baby). The surrogate mother
may or may not be a biological parent in this case. The ...
St. John says that you are a liar if you say you love God
and you don't love your neighbor. How can you love God whom you
do not see, if you do not love your neighbor whom you see, whom
you touch, with whom you live?" ---Mother Teresa The most moving
comments I have heard on what Mother Teresa has said is that she
saw a form of Jesus in each human being, and administered to each
person in this light...she did not see a human being who should
be judgementally shunned because they are diseased, poor, gay, of
a different race or religion, or even a murderer--she saw a manifestation
of Jesus in need of our love and assistance. If we learn nothing
else from this saintly woman, I hope we learn and uphold this vision.
Our world is now missing a remarkable, holy manifestation of Christ,
as we mourn the death and celebrate the life of Mother Theresa.

Very few people are unaware of the benefits of breastfeeding
for babies, but the many benefits to the mother are often overlooked
or even unknown. From the effect of oxytocin on the uterus to the
warm emotional gains, breastfeeding gives a mother many reasons
to be pleased with her choice. One of the best-kept secrets about
breastfeeding is that it's as healthy for mothers as for babies.
Unlike bottle-feeding mothers, who typically get their periods back
within six to eight weeks, breastfeeding mothers can often stay
amenorrheic for several months. Studies have confirmed that nonbreastfeeding
mothers lose less weight and don't keep it off as well as breastfeeding
mothers (Brewer 1989). After birth, mothers with a history of gestational
diabetes who breastfeed have lower blood sugars than nonbreastfeeding
mothers (Kjos 1993). Breastfeeding provides a unique interaction
between mother and child, an automatic, skin-to-skin closeness and
nurturing that bottle-feeding mothers ...

Mother had a pretty good day today, she was calm and the
aide said that Mother was calm during her shower. Mother had a mixed
day, she was agitated this morning and calm this afternoon and tonight.
When we got there this morning, Mother was glad to see us and we
took her to her room. When I got back, Mother was very agitated
and mad at Dad for taking her to the bathroom. We then went to the
hamburger place and Mother ate most of her hamburger. We took her
back to the nursing home and once we got back, I suggested a piece
of chocolate candy and Mother thought that was a good idea. Mother
was better today, but she still had a couple of episodes of agitation.
The nurse had her medication ready and I asked Mother if she was
ready to take her pills and she said something nasty to the nurse,
so we decided to take her to her room and let her calm down a little.
Mother ate fairly well at supper and was calm until we started to
leave and she started to get agitated, but as I took her ...
Mother Shipton was born Ursula Sontheil in 1488 in a cave
beside the river Nidd in North Yorkshire, England. The woman who
came to tend to her 15 years old mother, Agatha, spoke of a smell
of sulphur and a great crack of thunder as the child came into the
world. Her mother gave her up at age two and supposedly went to
live in a convent for the rest of her life. Mother Shipton exhibited
prophetic and psychic abilities from an early age. She wrote her
prophecies about events to come in the form of poems. She eventually
became known as Mother Shipton a woman helped many people. Mother
Shipton predicted important historical events many years ahead of
their time - the Great Fire of London in 1666, the defeat of the
Spanish Armada in 1588 - as well as the advent of modern technology.
She wrote her prophecies like poems. Three times shall lovely sunny
France Be led to play a bloody dance Before the people shall be
free Three tyrant rulers shall she see.
We buy our mothers gifts of candy, cards and flowers to show
her how much she means to us. More than forty-six countries around
the globe have a special day when they pay tribute to mothers. England
for instance, celebrates Mother's Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
There are conflicting accounts of the history of Mother's Day. One
account says the first known Mother's Day took place on the second
Sunday in May in Albion, Michigan. Another version of the origin
of Mother's Day says that the celebrations took place in the late
1800's in different places in the United States. Most sources give
the credit for Mother's Day to Anna M. Jarvis. It is generally agreed
that the first Mother's Day celebration took place in 1907, in a
tiny church in West Virginia when Anna Jarvis arranged a special
service to pay tribute to her mother. It was seven years later that
President Wilson declared Mother's Day a national holiday.
Trivia: Director/writer/actor 'Albert Brooks' asked Nancy
Reagan (who used to act under the name Nancy Davis) to play the
part of his mother. Also on Brooks' list of former actresses to
play his mother was Doris Day, but she showed no interest in coming
out of acting retirement. Brooks is an old friend of actress/writer
Carrie Fisher, and he knew her famous mother (Debbie Reynolds) through
her. Brooks was looking for a big-name actress from the past and
called Fisher to see if she thought her mother would accept the
role. However, in watching this movie with my folks, I found it
to be quite a funny little comedy about a grown man who tries to
connect with his mother. He goes to spend some time with his widowed
mother, Beatrice, played by the lovely Debbie Reynolds. What might've
started as a desire to find some inspriation to write by cooling
off from a divorce, becomes a 360 drive to reconnect with his mother,
and work out their innocuous differences in personality, ...

I think it was Macaulay who said that the Roman Catholic
Church deserved great credit for, and owed its longevity to, its
ability to handle and contain fanaticism. This rather oblique compliment
belongs to a more serious age. What is so striking about the "beatification"
of the woman who styled herself "Mother" Teresa is the abject surrender,
on the part of the church, to the forces of showbiz, superstition,
and populism. It's the sheer tawdriness that strikes the eye first
of all. It used to be that a person could not even be nominated
for "beatification," the first step to "sainthood," until five years
after his or her death. She said that suffering was a gift from
God. Many volunteers who went to Calcutta came back abruptly disillusioned
by the stern ideology and poverty-loving practice of the "Missionaries
of Charity," but they had no audience for their story. Sunday was
a great day for these parasites, who saw their crummy methods endorsed
